Founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia, Marimekko is a Finnish design house known for its bold, folk art and pop art inspired fabrics. Viljo’s oilcloth fabric proved unsuccessful, but Armi enlisted the aid of her artist friends to create bold fabrics. They showcased these initial offerings in simple dresses, which were featured in an upscale department store by the display manager, Georgio Armani! The two most influential designers that helped mold the Marimekko aesthetic were Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi and Maija Isola. Isola created the iconic Unikko or poppy print, which is still in production today. After expanding to the US in the 1960s, Jackie Kennedy helped bring them into the spotlight wearing 8 of their dresses while on the campaign trail with JFK. The company has continued to expand over the years, with production in multiple countries, but the fabrics are still created in their textile factory in Finland.
