Lucite is a brand name for a form of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) which is a thermoplastic. It has come to encompass a category of plastic used in jewelry, though it was initially a trademarked brand name from the DuPont company. Lucite can be clear, opaque, striated, speckled, and sometimes features a quality called Moonglow. It is often used to mimic gemstones and organic elements like bone and tortoise shell. Plastic jewelry became popular during the Great Depression, and Lucite emerged during WW II as an affordable and flexible jewelry material. It has become more collectible as of late, and there is a boom in new Lucite jewelry having a moment in the fashion world.
