Sam Edelman is a serial entrepreneur who has succeeded and failed on a grand scale multiple times. His father owned an exotic leather tanning company, but Sam was not interested in going into the family business. Instead he became involved in the horse trade. That led him to create a line of equestrian inspired shoes with his father that he licensed to Ralph Lauren under the label Horseshoes. After losing his domestic factory, he closed the business. After joining Kenneth Cole at Candies, the two designers created the Kenneth Cole Brand. He left this endeavor to work at Esprit, and met his future wife Libby. They sold their farm and house and invested in starting their own shoe brand Sam and Libby. The iconic Sam and Libby bow flat proved a huge success, and they sold the business for a profit in 1996. After a horse riding accident rendered him bed bound for 8 months in 2001, Sam saw a niche in the market for affordable quality shoes. They sold the horse farm, again, to finance, had a few missteps, and sold the brand to Caleres. Sam and Libby still run the company and Edelman shoes are some of the most innovative and interesting on the market today.
