DKNY Donna Karan was born Donna Ivy Faske in Queens NY to Helen “Queenie” Faske, a model who worked in Chester Weinberg’s showroom. Her father, Gabby Fasker, was a tailor and haberdasher, who died when Donna was three years old. Donna attended Parson’s School of Design, and worked for Anne Klein after graduating. Anne Klein died of cancer in 1974 and Donna and her friend Louis Dell’Ollio took the helm of the company. In 1984, she left to start her own label with her husband Steven Weiss and the Takiyo Corporation (owners of Anne Klein.) She was known in the 70s and 80s for her jersey knit collection of seven easy pieces, designed to be worn in endless combinations. Dubbed “The Queen of Second Avenue”, Karan continued to expand with her DKNY label aimed at the younger woman, DKNY men, and DKNY Jeans. She stepped down from the Donna Karan label in 2015, focusing on her lifestyle brand called Urban Zen. Donna Karan won the Coty American Fashion Critic’s Award twice with her partner Lois Dell’Ollio while working for Anne Klein, inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1984, The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named her Menswear Designer of the Year 1992 and Womenswear Designer of the Year 1990 and 1996. She was a nominee for the latter again in 2003 and was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the CFDA in 2004. She won special CFDA awards in 1985, 1986 and 1987. (Source-Wikipedia)
